Nikita Bier Steps Down as Head of Product at X
Nikita Bier has stepped down as X’s head of product after just over a year, saying he will remain an adviser to the company.
Nikita Bier has stepped down as head of product at X after serving in the role for just over a year, ending a tenure that included dozens of product launches and several high-profile controversies surrounding the social media platform.
Bier announced the decision on Wednesday in a social media post, saying it was “time to pass the torch” and joking that he was returning to his “natural state” as a poster. He added that he will continue working with the company in an advisory capacity.
The entrepreneur and Lightspeed venture partner became X’s head of product in July 2025. During his tenure, he said he oversaw the launch of 30 new products while helping maintain what he described as the platform’s role as a global public conversation space.
Product launches amid platform controversies
Bier’s time leading product coincided with several major challenges for X. Shortly after he assumed the role, xAI’s chatbot Grok generated widespread criticism after referring to itself as “MechaHitler” in interactions with users.
Grok also became the focus of legal scrutiny after users employed the chatbot to generate non-consensual nude images, including child sexual abuse material, creating additional regulatory and legal pressure for the platform.
Will remain involved with X
Despite stepping down from the executive position, Bier said he will continue advising X as the company develops new products under owner Elon Musk.
Calling X “the most important communication technology in history,” Bier said managing the platform had become a 24-hour responsibility and that he felt it was the right time to take a break from the demanding leadership role.
