Anthropic Explores Custom AI Chip Partnership With Samsung
Anthropic is reportedly in talks with Samsung to develop a custom AI chip, aiming to strengthen its AI infrastructure and reduce reliance on third-party processors.
Earlier this year, Reuters reported that Anthropic was considering developing its own artificial intelligence chips to address ongoing shortages of AI hardware. New reports now suggest the company is moving forward with those plans.
According to a report published by The Information on Thursday, Anthropic has been in discussions with Samsung about a potential collaboration to develop a custom AI chip. However, the report says the company has not yet determined exactly how the processor will be used, how it will integrate into server infrastructure, or what level of computing performance it will ultimately deliver.
Anthropic said that maintaining a diversified hardware strategy remains central to its long-term computing plans. The company noted that chips from Google, Amazon, and Nvidia will continue to play an important role in supporting its AI infrastructure. Regarding the reported discussions with Samsung, Anthropic said it had no additional comment.
A growing number of AI companies are investing in custom silicon, both to optimise hardware for specialised AI workloads and to reduce their dependence on Nvidia, which continues to dominate the AI chip market.
Anthropic’s reported efforts also follow a similar announcement from its major rival, OpenAI. Last week, OpenAI revealed a partnership with Broadcom to develop its own custom-built inference processor, known as “Jalapeño.” According to OpenAI, the chip delivers improved performance per watt and greater efficiency than competing processors. Meanwhile, both Amazon and Google already provide proprietary Tensor Processing Units (TPUs) as part of their cloud computing platforms.
Samsung already plays a significant role in the AI hardware ecosystem. The company is a key manufacturing partner for Nvidia, producing chips used to train and run advanced AI models. In return, Samsung relies on Nvidia’s software technologies in parts of its chip manufacturing process. The two companies are also collaborating on an AI chip manufacturing facility in South Korea, while Samsung has separately discussed potential chip development partnerships with Google.
