Apple to Introduce Gemini-Powered Siri as Early as February, Report Says

Apple is expected to reveal the first tangible outcome of its newly announced AI partnership with Google as early as February, according to reporting from Bloomberg journalist Mark Gurman.

Gurman reports that Apple is preparing to announce an updated version of Siri in the second half of February. The new assistant will reportedly be powered by Gemini, marking the first visible product tied to Apple’s AI collaboration with Google.

According to the report, this Siri update is finally expected to deliver on the capabilities Apple previewed in June 2024. Those promises included the assistant’s ability to complete tasks by securely accessing a user’s personal data and understanding on-screen content, enabling Siri to take more contextually aware and proactive actions across apps.

The February release is said to be only an initial step. Gurman notes that Apple is planning a much larger Siri upgrade for June, when the company holds its annual Worldwide Developers Conference. That version of Siri is expected to be significantly more conversational, resembling chatbot-style interactions like ChatGPT, and may run directly on Google’s cloud infrastructure.

The report follows months of speculation about Apple’s AI roadmap. Earlier coverage suggested the company had faced internal challenges in advancing its artificial intelligence strategy. Gurman previously reported that Apple executive Mike Rockwell had pushed back strongly on those claims during internal discussions last summer, dismissing one such report in blunt terms.

Since then, however, Apple’s direction appears to have shifted. Gurman points to the Google partnership and the recent departure of John Giannandrea, who previously led Apple’s AI efforts, as signs that the company has recalibrated its approach. With Gemini now playing a central role, Apple may be positioning Siri for a more competitive re-entry into the rapidly evolving AI assistant landscape.
