Asana has acquired workflow automation startup StackAI in a $75 million deal, further advancing its efforts to transform into an AI-powered workplace platform. As part of the acquisition, StackAI founders Tony Rosinol and Bernard Aceituno will join Asana and help accelerate the company’s AI roadmap.

The acquisition was announced on Thursday alongside Asana’s latest earnings report and investor update. According to the company, the move supports its broader vision of building what it calls an “operating system for human-agent teams,” in which AI agents work alongside employees to automate and streamline business processes.

StackAI specialises in AI-driven workflow automation, enabling organisations to build intelligent agents that operate across existing enterprise software systems. Its platform integrates with popular business tools such as Salesforce, Slack, and Google Workspace, enabling AI-powered workflows that can access information, complete tasks, and automate operations across departments.

Founded as part of Y Combinator’s Winter 2023 cohort, StackAI has emerged as a notable player in the growing AI automation sector. Before the acquisition, the company had raised nearly $20 million in funding, including a $16 million Series A round backed by investors such as Gradient, Epakon Capital, Lobby VC, LifeX Ventures, and Vercel CEO Guillermo Rauch.

Asana, best known for its work management software, has increasingly focused on AI products over the past few years. The company has launched tools such as AI Studio and AI Teammates, designed to help organisations automate repetitive tasks and improve productivity through AI-assisted workflows.

The company believes its deep integration into workplace operations provides a competitive advantage over standalone AI tools. By leveraging existing workflow data and organisational context, Asana aims to deliver more practical, useful AI-powered automation for enterprise customers.

Like many software companies, Asana has faced challenges in public markets during the rapid rise of generative AI. However, the company continues to invest heavily in AI initiatives and sees intelligent automation as a major growth opportunity.

“This acquisition accelerates our roadmap and takes us into the next phase of human-agent work,” CEO Dan Rogers said in a statement. “We’re already seeing strong momentum with AI Teammates and AI Studio, and StackAI will help customers automate increasingly complex business processes from start to finish.”

The acquisition highlights Asana’s commitment to expanding its AI capabilities as competition intensifies among workplace software providers seeking to bring more advanced automation and agent-based workflows to enterprise customers.
