Retro, a photo-sharing app built around private connections between friends, has raised more than $21 million in Series A funding as it continues building an alternative to algorithm-driven social feeds.

The funding was disclosed through a Securities and Exchange Commission filing by Retro’s parent company, Lone Palm Labs. The filing shows that the round closed in December, while Business Insider reports identified the company’s latest funding details.

Retro was founded by former Instagram product engineers Nathan Sharp and Ryan Olson. The app focuses on sharing photos with close friends rather than using recommendation algorithms that prioritise creator content and broader discovery.

Launched in 2023 as a personal photo journal, Retro has expanded its features to include private weekly photo sharing, shared albums, photo recaps, and a “rewind” feature that allows users to revisit memories.

Unlike many social platforms, Retro does not rely on advertising revenue. Instead, the company offers subscriptions that unlock features such as video, GIF and sticker comments, additional design options, unlimited history, and special app icons.

According to data from Appfigures, Retro has been downloaded about 7 million times since launch, with in-app spending increasing significantly over recent months. The company believes paying subscribers represent users who are highly engaged with the service.

The startup’s investors include Thrive Capital, Figma CEO Dylan Field, Scribble Ventures, Box Group, Imaginary Ventures, Coalition, Conviction, Copper, Positive Sum, and several angel investors.

PitchBook estimates Retro’s valuation has surpassed $100 million following the funding round, reflecting continued investor interest in social platforms focused on smaller, more personal communities.
