Announced on Wednesday, Spark is being integrated into the existing Gemini desktop application alongside a series of new features and improvements. These updates include the ability to monitor topics in real time, as well as expanded integrations with Google services such as Google Tasks and Google Keep.

The arrival of Gemini Spark on macOS positions Google’s AI assistant to compete more directly with desktop-focused AI agents including Claude Desktop, Microsoft Copilot, OpenClaw, and similar offerings. Running on macOS enables Spark to work with files stored on a user’s computer and, in future updates, perform more advanced remote tasks.

Although this capability is not available immediately, Google said users will soon be able to assign multi-step workflows to Spark from their smartphones. For example, someone could instruct the mobile version of Spark to retrieve information from a file stored on their Mac using the desktop agent.

For now, Spark can already organise and manage files stored locally, or use them as source material to create new Google Workspace documents or spreadsheets. Google highlighted an example in which Spark can automatically convert invoices stored on a Mac into a structured budgeting spreadsheet.

Gemini Spark for macOS is currently available in beta and is limited to Google AI Ultra subscribers in the United States.

When Spark debuted last month, one of the biggest shortcomings highlighted during early testing was the absence of integration with Google Keep, Google’s note-taking application. For many users, quick notes, shopping lists, reminders, and packing checklists fit naturally in Keep rather than requiring a full Google Docs document for simple tasks.

It appears that feedback was widely shared, as Google has now added support for both Google Tasks and Google Keep. In addition, Spark now connects with several third-party services, including Canva, Dropbox, Instacart, OpenTable, and Zillow Rentals.

These new integrations allow the assistant to complete a broader range of everyday tasks. Users can ask Spark to reserve restaurant tables, order groceries, create marketing materials in Canva, or even schedule apartment tours using supported services.

Google has also enhanced Gemini Spark with real-time topic monitoring, allowing the assistant to follow ongoing events and react as new information becomes available. This capability improves its usefulness for activities such as tracking sports results, monitoring stock prices, or following breaking news. Beyond that, Spark can now monitor social media activity, blogs, online shopping updates, and weather conditions.

In addition, Google confirmed it is rolling out support for custom Model Context Protocol (MCP), enabling users to connect their preferred applications directly to Gemini Spark. This gives users greater flexibility to build a more personalised AI assistant tailored to their own workflows, tools, and daily requirements.
