Kiwibit AI Smart Bird Feeder Brings Backyard Birdwatching to Life
Discover how the Kiwibit AI-powered bird feeder identifies bird species, captures photos and videos, and helps nature lovers enjoy smarter backyard birdwatching.
Earlier this month, I had the opportunity to test the Kiwibit Bird Feeder Pro 4K AI Camera, and it has quickly become one of my favourite additions to the backyard.
Getting started with the device is relatively simple. The feeder supports multiple installation methods, allowing it to be mounted on a pole, attached to a window ledge, or secured to a tree. Its dual-compartment seed design makes refilling and cleaning easy, while the integrated solar panel helps keep the system powered without constantly worrying about battery life.
The device also scores well in terms of durability and imaging capabilities. Additional features include support for 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi connectivity, cloud storage options, built-in two-way audio with an integrated microphone and speaker, and a 130-degree wide-angle camera lens.
Once the feeder was installed in my backyard, I connected it to the companion Kiwibit mobile app. Through the app, users can receive notifications whenever birds arrive, review recorded footage, and monitor activity over time.
After a few weeks of use, the experience became even more enjoyable. My phone would send alerts whenever a new visitor appeared, and I found myself checking for updates throughout the day. Even during periods of heavy rain, the feeder continued attracting birds, including a striking northern cardinal that has become a familiar sight nearly every morning. At the time of writing, the system has successfully documented visits from six different bird species.
Since then, I’ve become somewhat obsessed with tracking the activity. Each morning starts with a quick look at the app to see which feathered guests stopped by overnight. I’ve even found myself sharing the clips with friends and family as though the birds were my own pets. One recurring alert that never fails to make me laugh is the app’s “nuisance animal detected” notification whenever squirrels help themselves to the birdseed supply—which happens about as frequently as you might expect.
The application relies on Kiwibit’s proprietary bird-recognition technology, which can identify more than 10,000 bird species, including blue jays, ravens, mourning doves, and many others. One particularly useful feature is the Activity section, which tracks recorded visits, saved videos, and the total number of species observed. Users can also browse through previous dates using the calendar function. Meanwhile, the Birds section provides detailed information about each species, including descriptions sourced from Wikipedia.
That said, I did notice a minor issue with the system, which typically sells for between $179.99 and $249.99 depending on the model selected. On occasion, the AI appears to overcount bird visits. For instance, if a house sparrow remains feeding in front of the camera for an extended period, the software may register multiple visits even though the bird has barely moved.
Despite that small limitation, my overall experience with the Kiwibit Bird Feeder Pro has been extremely positive. For anyone looking to enjoy nature more interactively while tracking different bird species, almost like collecting Pokémon, this smart feeder is worth considering. Just don’t be surprised when the local squirrels decide to become regular visitors as well.
