Mark Zuckerberg Buys Historic Strancally Castle in Ireland
Mark Zuckerberg and Priscilla Chan have bought Ireland’s historic Strancally Castle, a 440-acre Gothic estate in County Waterford.
Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg and his wife, Priscilla Chan, have purchased the historic Strancally Castle and its 440-acre estate in County Waterford, Ireland. The off-market purchase price has not been disclosed, but The Irish Times estimated the property’s value at between €20 million and €30 million.
The Gothic-style castle was built around 1830 for former Conservative lawmaker John Keily and designed by architects James and George Richard Pain. The estate sits along the River Blackwater and was previously owned by financier Michael Alen-Buckley and his wife, Giancarla, who had lived there for about 25 years.
Zuckerberg adds an Irish base near Meta’s operations
A spokesperson said Zuckerberg and his family plan to spend time at the property and continue caring for the historic home. The Guardian reported that the family intends to use Strancally as a base during visits to Ireland.
Ireland has long played an important role in Meta’s European operations. Dublin is home to the company’s international headquarters, while Meta also operates its Clonee data centre in County Meath.
The Irish acquisition follows another major property purchase by Zuckerberg and Chan earlier this year. In March, the couple bought a $170 million property in Miami’s exclusive Indian Creek community, an area sometimes called “Billionaire Bunker” and also home to Amazon founder Jeff Bezos.
The strategic purchase gives the couple a substantial property in Europe while strengthening their personal connection to a country where Meta has maintained a major corporate presence for years.
