Google is expanding Search and Gemini with a new set of AI-powered study tools designed to help students understand concepts, practice subjects, and create learning materials. The rollout strengthens Google’s push into AI-powered education as it competes with OpenAI and learning platforms such as Knowt and Gauth.

Search gets interactive study tools and quizzes

Google Search can now generate interactive learning experiences for complex topics. A student searching for the pH scale, for example, can receive an interactive visual inside an AI Overview, then use AI Mode to ask more specific questions such as plotting different citrus fruits on the scale.

Students can also create customised practice quizzes directly in Search across subjects including science, math, humanities and foreign languages. A user preparing for the SAT could ask Search to generate a quiz based on commonly tested vocabulary.

Google is also expanding Lens with an interactive learning experience scheduled to roll out in the coming weeks. Students will be able to photograph a problem using the Google app and receive explanations, help identifying possible mistakes and guidance when they are stuck.

Search can additionally turn uploaded materials into study documents. Students can combine files such as PDFs, documents, slides, and photos of handwritten notes to generate a condensed study resource that highlights important concepts.

Gemini adds research and 3D learning features

Google is bringing multi-step research reports to Gemini Live, allowing students to request research on a topic and return later to view and complete the report. They can then conversationally discuss the findings and ask follow-up questions using voice.

Gemini can also generate interactive 3D simulations tailored to a prompt. A request to explain DNA in 3D, for example, can produce a model that users can rotate and zoom in on. Responses can also include interactive tables and grids when relevant.

Google is bringing the learning features together in a dedicated hub within the Gemini app. From there, students will be able to create study notebooks, generate flashcards, take practice quizzes and access other learning tools from one place.

The expansion strengthens Google’s effort to position Search and Gemini as tools students can use throughout the learning process, from understanding a difficult concept to reviewing material and practising for an exam.
