Comcast Adds Wi-Fi Motion Detection to Newer Xfinity Routers
Comcast’s new Wi-Fi Motion feature turns newer Xfinity gateways into home motion sensors, but enabling it comes with important data-sharing considerations.
Comcast has introduced an opt-in feature that can turn millions of newer Xfinity home gateways into motion sensors, allowing customers to receive alerts when activity is detected inside their homes.
Called Wi-Fi Motion, the free feature detects changes or interruptions in a home’s Wi-Fi signal rather than relying on a dedicated camera or a conventional motion sensor. When the system detects movement, it can send a notification through the Xfinity app.
Wi-Fi Motion works with newer Xfinity gateways
The feature is available on Comcast’s advanced Xfinity gateways, beginning with the XB7 and extending to newer models, according to reporting by The Verge. Customers must choose to activate Wi-Fi Motion through the Xfinity app.
Comcast describes the feature as providing motion detection and basic home security. Because it uses the home’s existing Wi-Fi infrastructure, eligible customers do not need to install a separate sensor.
The system works by monitoring how movement affects Wi-Fi signals travelling through a home. Those changes can indicate activity, allowing the gateway to function as a basic motion detector even without identifying the person or object responsible for the movement.
Enabling the feature comes with a privacy consideration
Comcast’s terms for Wi-Fi Motion also describe circumstances in which information generated through the feature may be disclosed to third parties without additional notice to the customer.
According to an Xfinity support page cited in the source material, Comcast may disclose information generated by Wi-Fi Motion in connection with law enforcement investigations or proceedings, disputes involving Comcast, and court orders or subpoenas.
The provision is particularly relevant because Wi-Fi Motion generates information about activity detected inside a customer’s home. Users considering the feature therefore have both its potential security benefits and its data-handling terms to evaluate before enabling it.
Wi-Fi Motion remains optional, so compatible Xfinity gateways do not require customers to use this feature. Customers who want the feature must actively switch it on through Comcast’s app.
