Rivian Boosts 2026 EV Delivery Outlook After Strong Q2 Production
Rivian has raised its 2026 EV delivery forecast after stronger-than-expected Q2 production and vehicle deliveries. The R2 SUV launch and growing demand supported the upgraded outlook.
Rivian has told investors that it now expects stronger vehicle deliveries this year than previously projected, despite the challenges facing the electric vehicle market in the United States.
The company had earlier forecast annual deliveries of between 62,000 and 67,000 vehicles. However, Rivian announced on Thursday that it now expects to deliver between 65,000 and 70,000 vehicles during the year.
While the increase is relatively modest, it could prove significant for the automaker, which delivered 42,247 electric vehicles last year. The updated guidance comes at a time when EV sales growth in the U.S. has slowed, partly because Congress eliminated the $7,500 federal tax credit for electric vehicles and the Trump administration rolled back environmental regulations that had encouraged both the production and purchase of EVs
The revised forecast may also indicate that Rivian’s confidence in its recently launched mass-market electric vehicle, the R2 SUV, is beginning to translate into stronger demand.
The company did not point to one specific factor behind its improved outlook. Instead, it said the second quarter exceeded its own expectations due to “robust growth quarter-over-quarter in EDV and R1, coupled with the introduction of R2 deliveries.” EDV is Rivian’s designation for its electric delivery van.
Rivian also reported producing 12,613 vehicles in the second quarter and delivering 12,194 units. That result comfortably surpassed the company’s earlier expectation of shipping between 9,000 and 11,000 vehicles during the period.
The automaker has placed significant expectations on the R2 SUV, which went on sale last month with a starting price of around $58,000. To support production, Rivian has expanded its manufacturing facility in Normal, Illinois, and is simultaneously constructing a new factory in Georgia as it prepares to build hundreds of thousands of R2 vehicles annually.
Although Rivian has not officially disclosed how many R2 SUVs it expects to sell this year, chief financial officer Claire McDonough has previously referenced a target range of 20,000 to 25,000 units. It remains unclear whether that estimate has also been revised upward alongside the company’s latest delivery forecast or whether the additional expected deliveries will come from its commercial electric vans and the higher-priced R1 pickup trucks and SUVs
Regardless of where the additional sales originate, a higher number of vehicle deliveries would strengthen Rivian’s financial position as it continues working to recover from years of multibillion-dollar losses. The company had previously indicated that it expected to achieve consistent profitability in 2027. However, it recently postponed that goal after deciding to increase investment in autonomous driving software, largely following its agreement to supply self-driving R2 SUVs to Uber.
