Spotify introduces an option to turn off videos across its app

Spotify has announced a new set of controls that allow users to turn off all video content in the app. The update is designed to let listeners decide whether they prefer an audio-focused experience or one that includes video enhancements.

With this rollout, Spotify is expanding control options for different types of users. Family Plan managers can now turn video content on or off for any member on their subscription directly through account settings. Previously, this level of control was limited to managed accounts for children under 13. Spotify noted that in those cases, around 60% of accounts had video features turned off by a parent or guardian.

The new update also extends video controls to a broader audience. Premium and Basic subscribers across Individual, Duo, Family, and Student plans, along with users on the platform’s free tier, will now be able to manage how video content appears in their app.

To adjust these settings, users can go into the app’s settings menu and select the “Content and display” section. From there, they can toggle features like Canvas, Spotify’s looping visual elements, and videos associated with music or podcasts. Once preferences are set, they will apply consistently across all platforms, including mobile devices, desktop, web, and TV.

Spotify confirmed that the update is being rolled out globally and will reach all users over the course of the month.

In its announcement, the company emphasised that the new controls are meant to give users more flexibility in how they interact with content. It highlighted that listeners can now tailor their experience to their preferences, whether that means focusing purely on audio or incorporating video.

However, the company clarified that certain video content will remain visible. Users will continue to encounter video advertisements, as well as some Canvas-style visuals that appear within audio ads.

Spotify has steadily increased its focus on video over the past several years. It first introduced Canvas visuals in 2018, followed by video podcasts in 2020. In 2024, the platform expanded further by supporting music videos, a move aimed at strengthening its position against competitors like YouTube.

By introducing the option to turn off videos, Spotify appears to be responding to multiple factors. One is growing regulatory attention on the impact of video-driven platforms, particularly on younger audiences. Another is user demand for a more streamlined listening experience.

For listeners who prefer a distraction-free environment centred on music and audio, the new feature simplifies how they use the app while maintaining full control over their content experience.
