Uber Launches Live Video Streaming Feature for Teen Ride Accounts

Uber is introducing a new live video streaming feature for teen accounts in the United States, allowing parents and guardians to view a ride in progress through the driver’s selfie camera.

The company said the feature is designed to provide families with another safety option when teens use Uber independently. The rollout will expand nationwide in the coming weeks, following an initial launch in select markets.

Uber adds live ride video for linked parent accounts

When a teen ride begins, a parent or guardian account connected to the teen profile will receive a notification if the live video option is available. If the parent chooses to view the stream, both the driver and the teen rider will be notified.

Uber said only linked parent or guardian accounts can access the livestream. The company also noted that other passengers travelling with the teen cannot opt out of being shown in the video feed.

The livestream ends when the trip is completed, and Uber said the driver, teen rider, and parent or guardian will no longer have access to the video afterwards

Privacy questions remain around video storage and encryption

Uber said the video feed is encrypted, but the company has not specified whether the system uses end-to-end encryption. End-to-end encryption would prevent Uber itself from accessing the video content.

The feature uses the driver’s front-facing camera rather than a separate camera installed in the vehicle. Uber said the livestream is intended to help families check on teen rides without requiring direct communication during the trip.

The feature also expands Uber’s teen account safety tools

Uber first introduced teen accounts in the United States in 2023, allowing younger riders to use the platform through dedicated accounts connected to family members. The feature has since expanded to more than 50 countries.

The live video streaming option is currently available in nine U.S. markets, including Atlanta, Cleveland, and Rhode Island. Uber said it will become available nationwide over the following weeks.
