WhatsApp Adds Stronger Two-Step Verification and Passkey Security Updates

WhatsApp is rolling out new account security features designed to make it easier for users to protect their accounts, including stronger two-step verification, expanded passkey support, and additional information for calls from unknown numbers.

The updates come as messaging platforms continue to improve account protection tools, even as phishing attempts and account takeover methods become more advanced. Other messaging services, including Signal and Telegram, have also introduced security-focused features to help users protect their accounts.

WhatsApp strengthens two-step verification

WhatsApp’s existing two-step verification system uses a six-digit PIN as an additional security layer to prevent unauthorised access, even if someone obtains a user’s one-time verification code.

With the latest update, users can create a longer alphanumeric password that includes special characters, making the additional verification step more difficult to guess.

The company is also expanding passkey support by allowing users to add multiple passkeys to their WhatsApp accounts. The option is designed to help people who use multiple devices or switch between platforms such as iOS and Android.

Passkeys provide stronger account protection

WhatsApp introduced support for passkeys in 2024. Unlike traditional passwords, passkeys allow users to authenticate with device-based security methods such as Face ID or fingerprint recognition.

Passkeys reduce reliance on usernames and passwords, which are often targeted through phishing attacks. Because passkeys are tied to a user’s device, attackers typically need physical access to the device containing the authentication information to gain access.

WhatsApp adds more details for unknown calls

Android users will also receive additional information when they receive calls from numbers not saved in their contacts. The update can show details such as whether the caller’s number is from another country and whether they share any groups with the user.

WhatsApp said these updates are part of its broader effort to improve account security and make safety features easier for everyday users to use.

Recent WhatsApp updates expand user controls

The security changes follow several other WhatsApp updates introduced in recent months. The company launched usernames in June, allowing users to share their profiles without revealing their phone numbers.

Meta also introduced a subscription plan for WhatsApp that includes additional features such as profile customisation, super reactions, and story insights. The subscription launched alongside similar premium offerings for Instagram and Facebook.
