Bain Capital Ventures (BCV) has raised a new $1.6 billion fund to invest in startups focused on artificial intelligence, infrastructure, healthcare, security, and other emerging technology areas.

The new fund is 14% larger than BCV’s previous $1.4 billion fund announced three years ago. The firm plans to use the capital to back around 30 to 40 companies, mainly from the seed stage through Series B.

AI remains a major focus

BCV said many of its investments will focus on what it describes as the post-AGI era, where companies build AI applications and the infrastructure needed to support advanced AI systems.

Partner Kevin Zhang said key areas for investment include compute infrastructure, healthcare, physical AI, and security. The firm plans to support companies building AI infrastructure as computing costs continue to fall.

One example is Crusoe, a data centre developer that BCV backed in its Series A round in 2019. The company has since shifted from its original focus on crypto mining toward AI-related infrastructure.

Supporting startups beyond equity funding

BCV said its connection to Bain Capital gives founders access to additional resources, including expertise in credit, real estate, insurance, and private equity.

The firm said it can support companies through equity investments, debt facilities, infrastructure partnerships, and industry relationships. BCV partners often work together in teams of two or three when making investments.
