ByteDance delays global rollout of Seedance 2.0 AI video generator

ByteDance has put its plans to roll out its latest AI video model worldwide on hold, according to a report from The Information.

The Chinese tech company — widely recognised as the parent of TikTok and now a minority stakeholder in its U.S. spinoff — initially introduced Seedance 2.0 in China in February. Shortly after its launch, short clips created with the model began circulating online, including a widely shared video depicting Tom Cruise fighting Brad Pitt. The content quickly attracted significant attention and sparked criticism from the entertainment industry.

One prominent screenwriter remarked that the footage suggested, “It’s likely over for us,” reflecting growing concerns within Hollywood about the implications of such technology. In response, major studios issued a series of cease-and-desist notices to ByteDance. Legal representatives for Disney, in particular, accused the company of engaging in a “virtual smash-and-grab of Disney’s IP.” Following the backlash, ByteDance stated that it would work to strengthen intellectual property protections within its AI systems.

The company had originally intended to release Seedance 2.0 globally by mid-March, according to The Information. However, those plans have now been delayed as ByteDance’s legal and engineering teams focus on addressing potential legal risks and ensuring compliance before proceeding with a broader launch.
