Google has expanded the capabilities of its AI Mode by introducing support for third-party app integrations, allowing users to connect services such as Instacart, Canva and YouTube directly within its conversational search experience. The update is designed to help users complete tasks across their favourite apps without leaving AI Mode.

With the new feature, Google is moving AI Mode beyond answering questions and into performing actions. For example, users planning a barbecue can ask AI Mode to create a grocery list, then connect their Instacart account to add the ingredients directly to their shopping cart before completing the purchase through Instacart. Similarly, users looking for design inspiration can ask Canva to surface suitable templates, while party planners can create playlists and save them instantly to YouTube Music.

The update is rolling out to users in the United States, with Google saying it is working alongside additional partners to expand support for more applications in the future. The company noted that the new integrations build on the app connectivity introduced for the Gemini app earlier this year at Google I/O, which added support for services including Canva, OpenTable, Spark and Instacart.

Since launching AI Mode in early 2025, Google has steadily expanded its functionality. Recent additions include the ability to check whether products are available at nearby stores, browse web pages alongside AI-generated responses for easier comparison and follow-up questions, and use Personal Intelligence to access information from Gmail and Google Photos for more personalised results.

The latest integrations also strengthen Google’s position in the growing AI assistant market, where competitors such as OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Anthropic’s Claude already support connections with external apps. By enabling AI Mode to interact with popular services, Google is positioning its conversational search experience as a more capable tool for shopping, planning and everyday productivity.
