OpenAI is reportedly preparing to enter the consumer hardware market with a screen-free device designed to bring artificial intelligence into the home. According to a Bloomberg report, the company's first hardware product is a mobile smart speaker with integrated AI capabilities that connect to ChatGPT and offer a range of home-focused AI services. The device remains under development, and OpenAI has not publicly announced the product.

People familiar with the project told Bloomberg that the device is being described internally as a “humanlike AI companion that lives in the home.” Unlike conventional smart speakers that rely primarily on voice commands and fixed interactions, the reported product is intended to provide a more personalised experience by learning about its owner over time. Sources cited in the report said the system could draw on information from a user’s digital life, including emails, to deliver more tailored assistance.

The reported hardware also differs from existing smart speakers in its physical design. Bloomberg said the device will not include a display and instead will incorporate mechanical elements capable of moving on their own. According to the report, the design aims to make the product feel more like a companion and serve as a physical representation of OpenAI’s ChatGPT technology inside the home.

The project is said to involve several former Apple engineers who previously helped develop products including the iPhone and Mac. Their participation follows OpenAI’s acquisition of Jony Ive’s startup, Io. This deal strengthened expectations that the artificial intelligence company intends to establish a dedicated consumer hardware business alongside its software offerings.

Reports about OpenAI’s hardware ambitions come as the company faces legal action from Apple. Last week, Apple filed a trade secret lawsuit accusing OpenAI of using confidential information obtained through former Apple employees. Apple alleged that the conduct described in its complaint is only “the tip of the iceberg” and argued that additional details could emerge during discovery. OpenAI has denied wrongdoing.

Bloomberg, citing people familiar with OpenAI’s plans, reported that the company believes its proposed hardware differs significantly from Apple’s existing products and is unlikely to infringe on Apple’s trade secrets. OpenAI has not publicly commented on the device’s reported design or technical details beyond information attributed to anonymous sources.

The reported product also reflects growing interest across the technology industry in dedicated AI hardware. The source article notes that Hark, an artificial intelligence lab founded by Brett Adcock, raised an oversubscribed $700 million Series A funding round in May at a reported valuation of $6 billion. The company says it is developing proprietary AI models paired with custom hardware intended to serve as a universal interface between humans and machines. However, it has not disclosed the form factor of its planned device.

OpenAI has previously indicated it plans to launch a hardware product, and industry speculation has included a possible AI-focused phone. The latest report, however, suggests the company’s first consumer device could take a different direction by introducing a screen-free AI companion built specifically for the home rather than competing directly in the smartphone market.
