Spotify Expands Audio Content With Narrated Magazine Stories
Spotify has introduced narrated magazine articles for listeners, expanding its spoken-audio experience beyond podcasts and audiobooks. Users can now stream professionally narrated long-form stories directly inside the app.
Spotify has introduced narrated long-form magazine articles on its platform as the company continues to expand its audio-focused ecosystem. The new feature will be available to Premium subscribers through their existing 15-hour monthly audiobook listening allowance, while free users can purchase individual narrated articles for $1.99 each.
Starting this week, Spotify is offering more than 650 English-language magazine stories from major publications, including Rolling Stone, The Atlantic, Vogue, Wired, Vanity Fair, Pitchfork, and several others. According to Spotify, the narrated content was produced internally by the company’s audiobook division and is designed to complement its growing library of podcasts and audiobooks.
The streaming platform said the articles will feature a mix of human narration and AI-generated digital voices. Spotify added that any content that uses synthetic narration will be clearly labelled for listeners.
The move reflects Spotify’s broader strategy of increasing engagement with long-form audio content. The company believes narrated magazine stories could encourage users who primarily listen to music to explore audiobooks and other spoken-word formats.
Spotify executive Colleen Prendergast said shorter-form narrated content may help users gradually build listening habits that eventually lead to more audiobook consumption over time.
The addition comes as Spotify continues aggressively expanding its audio offerings. In recent weeks, the company has introduced several AI-related features, including AI-generated podcasts, AI audiobook narration tools for authors, AI-powered remixes and music covers, along with new fitness and lifestyle content integrated into the platform.
Spotify currently offers audiobook access through multiple subscription tiers, including monthly listening hours for Premium members, additional “top-up” listening plans, and separate audiobook-focused subscriptions for users who do not subscribe to its full music service.
