Stability AI, the company behind the Stable Diffusion image generation model, has raised $76 million in Series B funding as it expands its generative AI tools across image, video and music creation.

The funding round brings Stability AI’s total fundraising to $232 million. The company announced the investment with backing from major entertainment companies, including Universal Music Group, Sony Music Group, Warner Music Group, and gaming company Electronic Arts. Investment firms AMD Ventures and Pacific Alliance Ventures also participated.

Stability AI said the new capital will support the development of its creative production products and expansion of its professional services business. The company currently develops AI models focused on generating images, videos and music.

The startup said the latest funding reflects its focus on building partnerships with entertainment companies that use AI tools in creative workflows. Stability AI has previously announced collaborations with Universal Music Group, Electronic Arts and Warner Music Group to develop AI-based creative tools.

In its partnership with Universal Music Group, Stability AI said the companies would work together on professional AI music creation tools. The company also announced a collaboration with Electronic Arts to explore AI applications in game development. In contrast, its partnership with Warner Music Group focuses on responsible AI tools for music creation.

Stability AI Continues Expansion After Stable Diffusion Growth

Founded in 2019, Stability AI became widely known through Stable Diffusion, an open generative AI image model that helped accelerate public access to AI image creation tools.

The company is now expanding beyond image generation by developing additional AI systems for creative industries. Stability AI CEO Prem Akkaraju said the funding supports the company’s vision of using generative AI to help producers, musicians and storytellers create new content.

Copyright Lawsuits Continue Around AI Training Data

Stability AI has also faced legal challenges related to copyright and AI model training. Getty Images sued the company in the United Kingdom, alleging that Stability AI used copyrighted images in developing its image-generation technology.

A U.K. court largely ruled in Stability AI’s favour in that case, although a separate lawsuit filed by Getty Images in the United States remains ongoing. Court records for the U.S. case are available through CourtListener.

Legal disputes have also involved Stability AI’s internal ownership history. In 2023, co-founder Cyrus Hodes sued the company, claiming he was misled into selling his stake. Reuters reported on the lawsuits.

With new funding and expanded entertainment partnerships, Stability AI is continuing to build its generative AI platform while navigating ongoing legal questions surrounding AI-generated content and copyright.
