Trump Bought Up to $50K in SpaceX Shares Days After Record IPO
President Donald Trump bought between $15,001 and $50,000 in SpaceX shares on June 23, two weeks after Elon Musk’s company completed its historic U.S. IPO.
President Donald Trump bought between $15,001 and $50,000 worth of SpaceX shares on June 23, less than two weeks after Elon Musk’s company completed its record-setting initial public offering.
The transaction appeared in a financial disclosure signed Aug. 12 and released Aug. 22, according to Reuters reporting published by Yahoo Finance. The purchase was among more than 1,000 stock trades Trump disclosed in June.
Trump bought SpaceX shortly after its IPO
SpaceX began trading publicly on June 12 at $135 per share. Its stock had climbed above $200 before falling into the mid-$150 range by June 23. Because the disclosure reports only a value range and does not reveal Trump’s purchase price, it is not possible to determine exactly how many shares he acquired or his current return.
The investment creates a financial connection between the president and one of the federal government’s largest space and defence contractors. A recent Wall Street Journal analysis documented SpaceX’s expanding government contracts and regulatory wins, including billions of dollars in defence work.
Trump and Musk have maintained a politically significant relationship despite a high-profile public dispute last year.
White House says investments are independently managed
White House spokesman Davis Ingle told Reuters that third-party financial institutions independently manage Trump’s portfolio and replicate recognised indexes, including the Schwab 1000. He said neither Trump nor members of his family can direct individual purchases or sales.
SpaceX had also pushed for faster eligibility for major stock indexes ahead of its IPO. The Verge reported that Nasdaq changed its rules so that newly public companies could qualify to enter the Nasdaq-100 after 15 trading days, following a request from SpaceX.
That index-based investment structure could help explain how SpaceX entered Trump’s portfolio, although the disclosure itself does not identify which index or investment vehicle prompted the purchase.
