Blue Voice Raises $6M to Build AI Assistant for Police Officers

Blue Voice, an artificial intelligence startup developing real-time policy guidance tools for police officers, has raised $6 million in funding to expand its platform for law enforcement agencies.

The Boston-based company, founded by David Lawrence, Amit Patankar and Michael Gropman, provides officers with access to department-specific rules, laws and procedures while they are working in the field. The startup describes its product as an AI assistant designed for police officers, similar to how AI tools support professionals in other fields.

Blue Voice Uses AI to Provide Real-Time Police Guidance

Blue Voice was created after Lawrence, a former Harvard Law student, became interested in improving the way officers access critical information in high-pressure situations. The company says many policing decisions require officers to recall thousands of pages of policies, laws and regulations from memory.

Before using Blue Voice, officers who needed specific guidance often had limited options, such as searching lengthy department manuals, contacting supervisors or using general AI tools that are not trained on department-specific information.

The platform is trained on local laws, departmental policies, municipal rules, and operational guidelines. Blue Voice says its system provides officers with direct references to source materials instead of independently generating instructions, leaving final decisions to trained personnel.

Startup Expands Across Police Agencies

Blue Voice said officers at 225 county agencies across 25 states now use the platform daily. The company also says the tool answers questions roughly once every minute and has expanded its customer base over the past year.

The startup has developed additional features, including access to school maps during active-shooter emergencies and tools designed to assist detectives working on cold cases.

Lawrence said the platform has helped officers make decisions in situations where they needed immediate legal clarity. In one example shared by the company, a rookie officer used Blue Voice to confirm whether a situation involving a child met legal criteria for intervention.

AI in Policing Faces Growing Scrutiny

The adoption of AI tools by law enforcement has increased alongside broader debates about privacy, surveillance and accountability. Critics have raised concerns about some police technologies, including camera-based surveillance systems and their use by agencies.

Reports on police use of technology have highlighted concerns about potential misuse of surveillance tools, increasing attention to how AI systems should be deployed in public safety settings.

Blue Voice competes with established providers in law enforcement software. It aims to position AI as a support tool that helps officers access information while keeping decision-making with human operators.

Lawrence said he views the company’s mission as a way to use technology to improve public service, following his decision to leave law school and focus on building tools for law enforcement.
