Google Revamps Images With Discovery Feed and Built-In AI Image Creation
Google Images is introducing a discovery-focused redesign and built-in AI image generation, expanding Visual Search with personalised galleries and collections.
Google is introducing a redesigned Google Images experience that shifts the service beyond traditional image search and toward visual discovery, while also adding built-in AI image generation directly within Google Search. The updates coincide with the 25th anniversary of Google Images and are intended to help users find inspiration, organise ideas, and create custom visuals without leaving Google’s ecosystem.
The redesigned interface replaces the familiar search-focused layout with a personalised “For You” gallery that continuously surfaces images based on a user’s interests and browsing history. Google said the gallery updates in real time, offering a stream of visual content designed for exploration rather than simple search results.
Users can also save images into themed collections that appear as tabs above the main gallery. These collections allow people to organise inspiration for topics such as travel, fashion, home décor, or room design and return to them later. The redesign is rolling out over the coming weeks for desktop users in the United States in English, and users must be signed into a Google Account to access the new experience.
AI Image Generation Comes to Google Search
Alongside the redesigned browsing experience, Google is integrating AI-powered image generation directly into AI Overviews within Search. The feature is designed for situations where users cannot find an existing image online or want to visualise a specific idea.
Google said the capability uses its latest Nano Banana model to generate custom images from text prompts. The tool can also help users explore design concepts, such as changing a room’s colour scheme or visualising different decorating styles before making decisions.
Image generation in AI Overviews will begin rolling out in English over the coming weeks across regions where image creation is already available through AI Mode.
Expanding Visual Discovery
The latest changes reflectGoogle’ss broader effort to make Search a destination for both discovery and content creation. By combining personalised image browsing, saved collections, and AI-generated visuals into a single experience, Google is expanding the role of Google Images beyond simply locating existing content on the web.
The new features also keep more visual search and creative workflows within Google’s own products, reducing the need for users to turn to separate image discovery platforms or third-party AI image generation services when searching for inspiration or creating new visuals.
