Google continues to expand the role of artificial intelligence across its productivity products, and Gmail is the latest service to receive a major AI upgrade. During the company’s Google I/O 2026 developer conference on Tuesday, Google unveiled new conversational AI capabilities for Gmail that are designed to make searching through emails faster and more natural.

The enhancement builds upon Google’s broader “AI Inbox” initiative and introduces a new Gemini-powered feature called Gmail Live. Instead of relying solely on traditional keyword searches, users will now be able to speak naturally to Gmail and ask questions about information stored inside their inboxes.

According to Google, Gmail Live is intended to help users quickly locate important details hidden among hundreds or even thousands of emails. Rather than manually searching through messages, users can ask questions in everyday language and receive answers generated from their inbox.

For example, someone preparing for an upcoming trip might want to know flight details, hotel information, or travel schedules. Others may need information about a dentist appointment, the access code for an Airbnb stay, details about a school event, or other information that may have been buried in old email threads.

Traditionally, locating this information requires entering keywords into Gmail’s search box, searching for a sender’s email address, or filtering messages by a specific domain. While Gmail’s search functionality has improved significantly over the years, finding the exact email containing a specific detail can still be difficult, especially when similar terms appear across multiple conversations.

Google believes conversational AI can simplify that process.

“Gmail Live can answer naturally phrased questions, respond to follow-up questions, and pivot if you need to interrupt it,” explained Devanshi Bhandari, product lead for Gmail, during a media briefing held ahead of Google’s annual developer conference, where the feature was publicly introduced.

The announcement reflects Google’s broader strategy to demonstrate practical applications of artificial intelligence in everyday products used by millions of people. As the AI industry continues to invest heavily in infrastructure, including new data centres and large-scale computing resources, many consumers remain sceptical about the tangible benefits AI can provide in daily life.

Google hopes features like Gmail Live will help demonstrate real-world value by solving common problems users encounter. One such challenge is locating important information hidden inside crowded inboxes, something that nearly every email user has experienced at some point.

During a demonstration for reporters, Bhandari showcased Gmail Live by posing a variety of spoken questions about information stored in an inbox. The examples included questions about a child’s show-and-tell assignment, details concerning a school field trip, and travel-related information such as hotel reservations and flight arrangements for a trip to Detroit.

The interaction closely resembled conversations users might have with standalone AI assistants such as Gemini or ChatGPT. Rather than typing search queries, users ask questions aloud using natural language, and the AI generates responses based on the contents of their emails.

According to Google, one of Gmail Live’s strengths is its ability to understand context and subtle differences in language. During the demonstration, the system successfully distinguished between references to a “field trip” and a general “trip,” and smoothly transitioned between unrelated topics during the conversation.

Google also highlighted the AI’s ability to retrieve highly specific information from emails. For instance, Gmail Live can locate details such as hotel room numbers or determine which individual a user is referring to, even when that person is not explicitly named in the question.

The company noted that similar voice-based AI capabilities are also being introduced to Google Keep, Google’s note-taking and task management application. This suggests Google intends to expand conversational AI experiences beyond email and into other productivity tools within its ecosystem.

Importantly, Google emphasised that Gmail Live is not intended to replace traditional Gmail search. Instead, it serves as an additional method for accessing information. Users who prefer conventional search tools will still be able to use them as they always have.

The company’s decision to position Gmail Live as an optional feature may reflect lessons learned from previous AI rollouts. Google recently faced criticism after introducing AI-powered search enhancements within Google Photos. Many users expressed frustration with the changes, prompting Google to revise its approach and make AI-assisted search optional rather than mandatory.

Beyond Gmail Live, Google also announced several other upgrades for Gmail.

Among the new additions are ready-to-send draft suggestions, faster access to files and attachments, and enhanced task management tools that allow users to mark individual to-do items as completed directly within Gmail.

Google is also expanding access to its AI Inbox experience, which originally launched earlier this year. Previously available only to Google AI Ultra subscribers, the feature will now become accessible to both Google AI Pro and Google AI Plus subscribers as well.

AI Inbox is designed to help users manage overloaded email accounts by providing a consolidated overview of important tasks, messages, reminders, and other items that may require attention. Instead of manually reviewing large numbers of emails, users can see key information summarised and organised on a single page.

The company believes these capabilities can help users stay on top of responsibilities and reduce the time spent sorting through crowded inboxes.

While access to AI Inbox is expanding more broadly, Gmail Live will follow a more limited rollout strategy. Google confirmed that the voice-powered conversational feature will begin launching later this summer and will initially be available only to Google AI Ultra subscribers.

The introduction of Gmail Live represents another step in Google’s effort to integrate Gemini-powered AI across its product ecosystem. The company aims to make email management more intuitive, reduce the effort to find important information, and provide a more natural way to interact with one of the world’s most widely used communication platforms.
