Mistral AI secures $830M debt to build data center near Paris

Mistral AI has secured $830 million in debt financing to build a new data centre near Paris, with the facility expected to run on Nvidia's advanced chips. Reuters and CNBC reported the development.

The French AI company had previously outlined plans to build a data centre last year. In early 2025, CEO Arthur Mensch indicated that the firm would explore multiple financing options to expand its infrastructure. According to Reuters, the new facility will be located in Bruyères-le-Châtel and is scheduled to be completed and operational by the second quarter of 2026.

At the time of reporting, Mistral AI had not responded to requests for confirmation regarding the funding.

This latest move follows another major infrastructure commitment. Just last month, the company announced plans to invest $1.4 billion in Sweden to expand its AI capabilities, including the development of additional data centres. The broader strategy aims to deploy approximately 200 megawatts of compute capacity across Europe by 2027.

Arthur Mensch emphasised the importance of scaling up infrastructure in Europe, noting that demand is rising across multiple sectors. Governments, enterprises, and research institutions are increasingly seeking to build their own customised AI environments rather than relying entirely on external cloud providers. He stated that continued investment in regional infrastructure is essential to maintain innovation and technological independence across Europe.

Mistral AI has already raised more than €2.8 billion (around $3.1 billion) in funding from a range of prominent investors. These include General Catalyst, ASML, Andreessen Horowitz, Lightspeed Venture Partners, and DST Global, according to Crunchbase data.

The company's latest funding effort highlights the growing race among AI firms to build large-scale infrastructure, as demand for computing power continues to surge alongside the rapid adoption of artificial intelligence technologies.
