Trump says Netflix will face ‘consequences’ if it doesn’t fire board member Susan Rice
Donald Trump warns Netflix of potential “consequences” if the company does not remove board member Susan Rice, escalating tensions between the former president and the streaming giant.
President Donald Trump said Saturday in a post on social media that Netflix will “pay the consequences” if the company does not remove Susan Rice, who has been on its board of directors since 2018.
Trump’s remarks followed comments Rice made on the “Stay Tuned with Preet” podcast, hosted by Preet Bharara. Rice — the former U.S. ambassador to the United Nations who later held senior diplomatic and advisory positions in the Obama and Biden administrations — suggested that companies that “take a knee” to Trump could face repercussions if Democrats regain power.
“If these corporations think that the Democrats, when they come back in power, are going to, you know, play by the old rules, and […] say, ‘Oh, never mind. We’ll forgive you for all the people you fired, all the policies and principles you’ve violated, all, you know, the laws you’ve skirted,’ I think they’ve got another thing coming.
Trump responded on his Truth Social platform with a sharply worded post: “Netflix should fire racist, Trump Deranged Susan Rice, IMMEDIATELY, or pay the consequences. She’s got no talent or skills – Purely a political hack! HER POWER IS GONE, AND WILL NEVER BE BACK. How much is she being paid, and for what???”
In the same post, Trump included a screenshot of a message from far-right activist Laura Loomer, who criticised Rice’s podcast comments and alleged that “The Netflix-Warner Bros. merger would result in a streaming monopoly, which the Obamas will have a significant stake in” because of Netflix’s deal with the Obamas’ production company, Higher Ground.
Trump did not spell out what he meant by “consequences.” However, Netflix’s large acquisition of Warner Bros. will require approval from federal regulators. According to reports, Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos met with Trump before the merger announcement. After the deal was made public, Trump described Netflix as a “great company […], but it’s a lot of market share, so we’ll have to see what happens.”
The post echoed a similar demand Trump made last fall, when he urged Microsoft to fire its president of global affairs, Lisa Monaco, whom Loomer also targeted. Monaco remains employed at Microsoft.
