WhatsApp introduces AI-powered reply suggestions based on chats
WhatsApp now offers AI-generated reply suggestions based on conversations, helping users respond faster with context-aware messaging.
WhatsApp is rolling out a range of new features and updates, including one that generates AI-powered suggested replies based on users’ conversations. The messaging app, owned by Meta, is also introducing additional tools, including a new way to free up storage, the ability to enhance photos with Meta AI, and more.
Among the updates, the most prominent change is the enhancement to the app’s “Writing Help” feature, which assists users in composing messages. Writing Help, initially introduced last August, already allows users to rephrase text, proofread messages, or adjust tone. In a blog post published on Thursday, the company said the latest update will further help users craft messages more effectively and get them “just right.”
Meta appears to be encouraging users to rely on its built-in AI capabilities when writing messages, rather than turning to external tools like ChatGPT. However, the feature may not appeal to everyone, as many users prefer to maintain authentic, personal communication with friends and family rather than using AI-generated responses.
The company stated that conversations remain private, even when users use the Writing Help feature.
To access the tool, users need to tap the chat bar, select the stickers icon in the typing field, and then choose the pencil icon marked with sparkles, which indicates the AI-powered functionality.
In addition to messaging improvements, WhatsApp has introduced a feature designed to help users manage storage more efficiently. The app now allows users to locate and delete large files directly within chats. This enables users to remove unnecessary content without deleting entire conversations. For example, users can choose to clear only media files while preserving their chat history.
WhatsApp also announced that users can now edit photos directly within chats using Meta AI. This feature allows users to remove unwanted elements from images, change backgrounds, or apply stylistic effects.
Another update includes expanded support for transferring chat history, enabling users to move their conversations from iOS to Android devices and between devices on the same platform. Additionally, iOS users can now log in to two WhatsApp accounts simultaneously — a feature previously available only on Android.
The platform is also enhancing its sticker experience. As users type emojis, WhatsApp will now suggest relevant stickers as alternatives, making conversations more expressive.
According to WhatsApp, these features are currently being rolled out and will gradually become available to users worldwide.
