X is making it easier for AI assistants such as Claude, Cursor, Grok Build, and other applications that support the Model Context Protocol (MCP) to connect directly with its platform through a newly launched hosted MCP server.

On Monday, the Elon Musk-owned social media platform announced the availability of its hosted Model Context Protocol (MCP) server, enabling AI tools to interact with the X API using permissions tied to a user’s own account.

MCP is an open standard that provides a consistent way for AI models to connect to external applications, tools, and online services. Until now, developers who wanted AI assistants like Claude or Cursor to work with X had to create and host their own MCP server, integrate it with the X API, and manage the authentication process themselves. With the new hosted solution, X now manages the MCP infrastructure while users authenticate through their existing X accounts.

The change allows developers to spend less time building integration layers and more time focusing on the applications and experiences they want to create.

For years, developers have been able to use X’s API to search posts, retrieve user information, analyse conversations, monitor trends, and perform numerous other functions. The hosted MCP does not introduce additional API capabilities; instead, it streamlines the exposure of existing features to AI-powered applications. In doing so, X aims to position itself as a valuable source of real-time information that AI systems can retrieve, analyse, and interpret, rather than serving solely as a social networking platform.

With this launch, X joins a growing list of technology companies that have introduced official MCP servers or endpoints, including GitHub, Slack, Notion, Stripe, and Salesforce.

At the same time, making AI integration easier naturally raises concerns that reducing technical barriers could encourage greater levels of automated activity or spam across the platform.

However, X clarified that its hosted MCP server does not support the platform’s Write API endpoints. As a result, developers cannot use the service to publish posts automatically—or even manually—through MCP-enabled AI tools.

The company also emphasised that the hosted MCP does not bypass its existing API policies. Standard usage rules remain in place, and access will continue to be restricted if the platform detects spam, abuse, or other prohibited behaviour.

Earlier this year, X also introduced updates to its API v2 designed to reduce AI-generated spam, particularly large volumes of automated replies within conversations. In addition, the company recently revised its API pricing, raising the cost of publishing posts to $0.015 and increasing the fee for posting links to $0.20. At the time, X said the pricing adjustments were intended to “curb vectors of misuse,” making large-scale spam campaigns more expensive to operate.
