YouTube Rolls Out AI Podcast Discovery, Auto Speed Playback and New Listening Features
YouTube has introduced new podcast-focused features for Premium users, including AI-powered podcast recommendations, Auto Speed playback, and an improved on-the-go listening mode designed for a smoother audio experience.
YouTube announced on Thursday that it is introducing a range of new podcast-focused features for Premium subscribers, including AI-powered podcast recommendations, an intelligent “Auto speed” playback option, and a new listening mode designed for users on the move.
The latest additions highlight YouTube’s continued efforts to strengthen its position in the podcast market as competition intensifies. The move comes at a time when companies such as Netflix are investing more heavily in video podcasts. At the same time, platforms like Spotify and Apple Podcasts remain major destinations for audio-first listeners. By focusing on discovery and convenience, YouTube aims to attract and retain podcast audiences across different listening habits.
The platform’s existing “Ask Music” feature already enables Premium subscribers to create personalised playlists and radio stations. Building on that capability, YouTube is now introducing AI-powered podcast recommendations that suggest shows based on a user’s mood, preferred genres, or podcasts they already enjoy.
Another major addition is the new “Auto speed” feature, which automatically optimises playback. Instead of requiring users to adjust playback speed manually, the feature intelligently adjusts playback during slower conversations or more information-heavy sections. The goal is to provide a smoother and more efficient listening experience while maintaining clarity and comprehension.
Although YouTube already allows listeners to choose different playback speeds, podcast hosts often vary their speaking pace throughout an episode. The new Auto speed functionality is designed to adapt to those changes in real time, helping users consume content more comfortably without constantly adjusting settings.
The company is also introducing a dedicated on-the-go listening mode for Premium members. This mode includes simplified controls tailored for activities such as commuting, exercising, walking, or multitasking. Users will have quick access to common actions, including skipping forward or backwards and moving directly to the next episode. According to YouTube, the feature is designed to improve the overall background listening experience.
Auto speed and the new on-the-go mode are currently available to Premium users on Android devices, with support for iOS expected in the coming months.
YouTube also shared updated podcast engagement figures, stating that Premium subscribers watched more than 800 million hours of podcast content in April 2026. The company added that YouTube Podcasts now reaches over 1 billion monthly active users worldwide.
With the introduction of these new features, YouTube is looking to enhance podcast discovery, improve the listening experience and further expand its audience in the increasingly competitive podcasting space.
