Amazon unveils Alexa+ feature that creates personalized podcast episodes
Amazon’s Alexa+ can now generate personalised podcast-style audio episodes, offering users AI-powered summaries, stories, and tailored listening experiences.
Amazon has announced a new update to Alexa+, introducing a feature that lets users create personalised podcast episodes simply by asking the AI assistant about a topic they want to explore.
The new capability, called "Alexa Podcasts," began rolling out to customers across the United States on Monday. According to Amazon, the feature is designed to transform virtually any subject a user is interested in into a custom podcast episode, generated within minutes.
Using the feature is intended to be straightforward. Users ask Alexa+ to create a podcast about a topic of their choice. There is no need to upload documents, prepare source material, write scripts, or organise content beforehand.
Instead, Alexa+ automatically researches the requested topic, gathers relevant information, and prepares a summary outlining what the podcast episode will cover. Before the episode is generated, users can customise several aspects of the final product, including its length, tone, style, and specific areas of focus.
After the content is finalised, Alexa+ uses AI-generated host voices to narrate the podcast episode. Once the podcast is complete, users receive a notification on compatible Echo Show devices and in the Alexa mobile application.
Generated episodes are also stored inside the Alexa app under the "Music" and "More" sections, allowing users to revisit and replay previously created podcasts whenever they choose.
The launch represents another step in Amazon's broader effort to expand Alexa+ beyond its traditional role as a voice assistant. Rather than simply responding to questions, setting reminders, or controlling smart-home devices, Alexa+ is increasingly being positioned as a personalised, AI-powered content-creation platform that generates customised experiences for individual users.
At the same time, the new feature is likely to generate discussion across the technology and media industries. The growing use of AI-generated voices and automatically produced content continues to raise questions regarding ethics, accuracy, transparency, and the long-term impact on traditional creators and media professionals.
There are also broader concerns regarding the reliability of AI-generated podcast content, particularly when discussing current events, specialised subjects, or complex topics that require careful sourcing and contextual understanding.
To address those concerns, Amazon highlighted its partnerships with several major news organisations that help provide information used by Alexa+.
According to the company, Alexa+ can access real-time information through agreements with several prominent media outlets, including Associated Press, Reuters, The Washington Post, Time, Forbes, Business Insider, Politico, USA Today, Condé Nast, Hearst, and Vox Media.
Amazon also noted that Alexa+ has access to content from more than 200 local newspapers throughout the United States, providing additional information sources for responses and generated content.
Looking ahead, Amazon says it is exploring additional forms of personalised AI-generated audio experiences beyond podcasts. Future possibilities include customised news briefings tailored to individual interests, as well as audio content created from users' own documents, shared files, and personal information sources.
The introduction of Alexa Podcasts further illustrates how AI assistants are evolving from simple voice-controlled tools into platforms that create personalised media experiences, with Amazon continuing to expand Alexa+'s role in content generation, information delivery, and everyday digital interactions.
