Disney’s OpenAI Deal Is Exclusive for Just One Year — Then It’s Open Season

Disney’s three-year licensing partnership with OpenAI includes just one year of exclusivity, Disney CEO Bob Iger confirmed in a recent interview with CNBC. The partnership, signed last week, will integrate Disney’s iconic characters into OpenAI’s Sora video generator. Once the exclusive year ends, Disney is free to explore similar partnerships with other AI companies.

The deal brings OpenAI a prominent content partner, allowing users to access over 200 characters from Disney, Marvel, Pixar, and Star Wars to create content using Sora. Currently, OpenAI is the only AI platform legally allowed to use these beloved characters.

For Disney, the deal provides an opportunity to experiment with generative AI and explore how its intellectual property can be leveraged in this new domain. It also gives the company a year to evaluate the success of its partnership with OpenAI before considering other agreements.

“No human generation has ever stood in the way of technological advance, and we don’t intend to try,” Iger said in his CNBC interview. “We’ve always felt that if it’s going to happen, including disruption of our current business models, then we should get on board.”

In a timely move, Disney sent a cease-and-desist letter to Google on the same day it announced the OpenAI deal, accusing the tech giant of copyright infringement. While Google did not confirm or deny the allegations, the company stated it would engage with Disney on the matter.
