Google is updating Search to further refine its AI-powered experience by adding more context to links, including excerpts from web forums, blogs, and discussion boards, along with a new feature that highlights links from a user’s news subscriptions.

While pulling information from forums and online communities could help users find answers to niche or highly specific questions, the decision could also raise new concerns about accuracy and reliability.

Two years ago, Google significantly reshaped Search by putting artificial intelligence at the centre of the experience. Now, when users search for something, Google frequently displays an “AI Overview” that attempts to summarise information directly within the results page. The feature has received mixed reactions since launch.

Many users quickly pointed out that the AI system could easily be manipulated because it struggled to understand sarcasm, satire, or unreliable sources. In one widely shared example, Google’s AI cited The Onion while recommending that users eat “one small rock per day.” In another case, it referenced Reddit comments suggesting people add glue to pizza so the cheese would stick better.

Although Google’s AI Overviews have improved considerably since then, they remain vulnerable to hallucinations, much like other large-language-model-powered tools.

A recent analysis by The New York Times found that AI Overviews produced correct information roughly 9 out of 10 times. However, for a company handling trillions of searches annually, even a small percentage of inaccurate responses could translate into hundreds of thousands of misleading search results every minute.

Not every search query has a simple yes-or-no answer, though, which is one reason Google appears interested in incorporating more perspectives from forums and online discussions. There’s already a long-standing trend of users adding the word “Reddit” to their Google searches because they often prefer reading opinions and firsthand experiences from real people.

“For many searches, people are increasingly seeking out advice from others,” Google explained. “To help you find the most helpful insights to explore further, AI responses will now include a preview of perspectives from public online discussions, social media, and other firsthand sources. We’re also adding more context to these links, like a creator’s name, handle, or community name, to help you decide which discussions you might want to read or participate in.”

Still, the update also raises questions about the role AI Overviews are supposed to play inside Search. Is the AI Overview meant to answer a question directly, or is it simply curating a variety of sources that may contain the answer? In some ways, that starts to resemble a traditional Google search experience again.

Google is, at minimum, adding more context around where AI-generated commentary comes from, which could help users better judge whether a source appears trustworthy. The approach is similar to how tools like ChatGPT or Claude sometimes provide citations and links intended to support their responses.

Even so, users may still need to verify those citations themselves, since AI systems can hallucinate or misinterpret the validity of the sources they reference.
