Google Renames NotebookLM to Gemini Notebook, Adds AI Coding Features
Google is renaming NotebookLM to Gemini Notebook and introducing code-execution capabilities that enable interactive data analysis in AI-powered research notebooks.
Google is rebranding its AI-powered research tool, NotebookLM, as Gemini Notebook, adding another product to its expanding Gemini ecosystem. Alongside the name change, the company is introducing new capabilities that allow users to execute code within notebooks for more interactive data analysis.
Originally unveiled as Project Tailwind during Google I/O 2023, NotebookLM has grown into a widely used research platform. Google says the service is now used by more than 30 million people and over 600,000 organisations. Over the past three years, the company has expanded the platform with features including AI-generated podcasts, curated notebooks, video overviews, support for additional file formats and an enterprise offering.
The popularity of NotebookLM has also influenced the broader AI industry, with several companies and startups introducing similar research assistants and podcast-generation tools based on source material.
As part of the latest update, Google is turning every notebook into its own secure container, allowing users to generate and run code directly inside the workspace. The company says this capability enables users to combine information from multiple sources and perform more advanced data analysis without leaving the application, making research results more interactive.
The new code execution feature is initially available to subscribers of the Google AI Ultra plan, as well as Workspace business customers with AI Ultra Access and AI Expanded Access. Google said users on the AI Pro plan will receive access in the coming weeks.
Google also confirmed that users can already open their notebooks within the Gemini app and that Gemini Notebook will soon become accessible through AI Mode in Google Search, further integrating the research tool across the company’s AI products.
