Hugging Face Reportedly Explores Sale at $13B-Plus Valuation
Hugging Face is reportedly exploring a potential sale at a valuation of $13 billion or more, with no buyer identified and no agreement reached yet.
Hugging Face is reportedly evaluating acquisition interest that could value the influential AI developer platform at $13 billion or more, nearly three times its valuation from its last funding round.
Potential buyers have approached the company, and it is working with a bank to assess the interest, according to Business Insider. No buyer has been publicly identified, and no agreement has been reached.
Hugging Face has become core AI infrastructure
Founded in 2016, Hugging Face operates a widely used platform where developers and researchers can publish, discover, test and download AI models and datasets. Its position at the centre of the open AI ecosystem has made the company increasingly valuable as demand grows for infrastructure surrounding frontier and open-source models.
Hugging Face was valued at $4.5 billion in 2023 after raising $235 million in a round led by Salesforce Ventures, with participation from investors including Google, Amazon, Nvidia, Intel, AMD, IBM and Qualcomm.
The company has also shown that it is willing to prioritise independence over a higher valuation. Earlier this year, Hugging Face turned down a $500 million investment proposal from Nvidia that would have valued it at roughly $7 billion. The Financial Times reported that Hugging Face did not want one dominant investor to gain excessive influence over the company.
A sale is far from certain
CEO Clem Delangue has emphasised financial sustainability and the company’s responsibility to the developers and researchers who store models and data on its platform. Hugging Face has also said its finances have strengthened substantially, reducing pressure to raise additional capital.
That makes the reported acquisition discussions difficult to interpret as evidence that Hugging Face has decided to sell. For now, the company appears to be evaluating interest in a business that has become a central part of the AI development ecosystem while maintaining the option to remain independent.
