Meta AI app rises to No. 5 on App Store following Muse Spark launch

Meta’s AI app has experienced a sharp rise in downloads following the launch of its latest AI model, Muse Spark, introduced on Wednesday. The release marks the first major model rollout under Alexandr Wang, who now leads Meta’s Superintelligence Labs after being recruited from Scale AI last year to revamp the company’s AI strategy.

According to fresh data from Appfigures, increased user interest pushed the Meta AI app from No. 57 on the U.S. App Store before the launch to No. 5 just a day later, indicating a surge in new installations.

Additional insights from Sensor Tower suggest that the app recorded approximately 46,000 downloads on iOS in the U.S. on April 8, 2026, representing an 87% increase over the previous day. On Android, however, growth was more modest, with U.S. downloads increasing by about 3% during the same period.

Meta has described Muse Spark as a significant improvement over its earlier Llama 4 models. The release is part of the company’s broader effort to close the gap with competitors like OpenAI and Anthropic. This push has involved substantial investment, including billions spent on talent acquisition and a $14.3 billion stake in Scale AI.

Muse Spark supports multimodal input, allowing users to interact through voice, text, and images. It is designed to handle a variety of tasks, such as assisting with health-related queries and solving complex problems in fields like science and mathematics. The model also supports visual coding, enabling users to generate websites and simple games using prompts.

The system can deploy multiple subagents simultaneously to process user requests more efficiently, according to the company.

Meta plans to expand access to the model across its ecosystem, including platforms like WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook, and Messenger, as well as its AI-powered glasses in the coming weeks.

Alongside the model launch, Meta updated both the mobile app and the web interface with a redesigned experience that lets users switch between modes as needed.

Despite the recent growth, the Meta AI app still trails behind leading AI chatbot apps, including ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini, which currently hold the top positions on the App Store.

Wang highlighted the app’s improved ranking in a post on X, noting that usage continues to grow.

Data from Appfigures shows that Meta AI has reached 60.5 million downloads globally across the App Store and Google Play, with 25 million of those installs occurring this year alone. Over the past five months, downloads have increased by 138% compared to the app’s initial launch period.

India has emerged as the largest market for Meta AI downloads, followed by the United States, Brazil, Pakistan, and Mexico.

Beyond app installations, Sensor Tower reported a major spike in web usage. Daily visitors to the Meta AI website in the U.S. rose by more than 450% day-over-day, reaching a record high on April 8, 2026 — a jump of over 570% compared to the average from the previous 30 days.
