OpenAI has launched a dedicated ChatGPT desktop app for Linux, filling a longstanding gap in its desktop lineup and bringing ChatGPT, ChatGPT Work and Codex to users of several major Linux distributions.

The company released the Linux app worldwide in preview this week after repeated requests from members of the Linux and open-source developer communities.

“Linux has been one of the most-requested platforms for the desktop app, and this launch extends ChatGPT and Codex across every major desktop operating system,” OpenAI said Tuesday.

ChatGPT desktop app arrives on Linux.

OpenAI said the initial release supports desktop versions of Ubuntu 24.04 and 26.04 LTS, Debian 13, and Fedora 43 and 44.

Linux encompasses hundreds of distributions, meaning the initial compatibility list covers only part of the wider ecosystem. However, Ubuntu and Debian in particular serve as foundations for numerous downstream distributions and desktop variants, potentially extending compatibility beyond the systems explicitly listed by OpenAI.

The Linux release gives users access to ChatGPT alongside OpenAI’s newer productivity and developer products. ChatGPT Work, the company’s persistent workspace for professional projects, is included, as is Codex for software development tasks.

OpenAI follows Anthropic onto Linux desktops.

OpenAI is not the first major AI company to bring a dedicated assistant to Linux. Anthropic released a Linux beta of its Claude desktop app about a month earlier.

Anthropic currently lists Ubuntu 22.04 or later and Debian 12 or later among the supported environments for Claude Desktop on Linux.OpenAI’s arrival gives Linux users another native option for accessing leading AI assistants without relying exclusively on a web browser. With the preview now available worldwide, ChatGPT has an official desktop presence across Linux as well as Windows and macOS.
