OpenAI reshuffles leadership, assigns COO Brad Lightcap to head special projects
OpenAI restructures leadership as COO Brad Lightcap takes charge of special projects, signalling a strategic shift in operations and innovation focus.
OpenAI has implemented a series of leadership changes, with several senior executives taking on new responsibilities, according to a Bloomberg report. A spokesperson for the company confirmed that the personnel adjustments have taken place.
In an internal memo, AGI development CEO Fidji Simo announced that Chief Operating Officer Brad Lightcap will transition into a new role leading “special projects.” This position will focus on handling complex deals and strategic investments across the organisation. Lightcap will now report directly to OpenAI CEO Sam Altman.
Some of Lightcap’s previous commercial responsibilities will be reassigned to Denise Dresser, the former CEO of Slack, who recently joined OpenAI as its chief revenue officer. Her expanded role will include oversight of key business operations previously managed by Lightcap.
Simo also shared a personal update in the memo, revealing that she will be taking medical leave for several weeks due to a neuroimmune condition. She explained that despite efforts to continue working, her health requires immediate attention.
“I have done everything possible to avoid it, but sadly,y my body isn’t cooperating,” Simo wrote, noting her frustration at stepping away during a period of significant progress for the company.
During her absence, OpenAI co-founder and president Greg Brockman will assume responsibility for managing product operations, ensuring continuity across development efforts.
Another leadership change involves Kate Rouch, OpenAI’s head of marketing, who is stepping down from her current role to focus on cancer recovery. According to the memo, she is expected to return in the future in a more limited capacity once her health improves. In the meantime, the company will begin searching for a new chief marketing officer.
In a public statement, Open emphasised that its leadership structure remains strong and aligned with its core priorities. The company highlighted its ongoing focus on advancing frontier AI research, expanding its global user base — which is approaching one billion users — and supporting enterprise applications.
Despite internal shifts, OpenAI remains confident it will continue to operate with stability and forward momentum as it navigates growth and organisational changes.
