Pinwheel has expanded its lineup of child-focused technology with the launch of a new home phone that prioritizes voice communication over apps and social media. Called Pinwheel Home, the Wi-Fi-enabled device is aimed at children between the ages of 5 and 10, offering families a way to introduce phone communication without handing over a smartphone.

The announcement comes as parents continue to search for technology that balances children’s independence with digital safety. Instead of supporting messaging, internet browsing, or entertainment features, the new device is dedicated entirely to voice calls, managed through parental controls.

Unlike traditional landline telephones, which require a physical connection, Pinwheel Home operates over the home’s Wi-Fi network. The company says the approach allows families to place the phone almost anywhere with internet access while preserving the familiar experience of using a household phone.

Designed to encourage conversation instead of screen time

Pinwheel positions the new product as an entry point before children receive their first smartphone. By limiting functionality to voice calls, the company aims to encourage children to build communication skills while reducing exposure to digital distractions commonly associated with mobile devices.

Parents manage the phone through Pinwheel’s Caregiver Portal, where they can approve contacts, block unknown callers, filter spam and robocalls, and establish calling schedules or daily time limits. The device also includes voicemail and speed-dial features.

The company plans to expand functionality through future software updates. Planned additions include three-way calling and integration with Pinwheel’s existing smartwatches and smartphones, allowing children to use the same phone number across multiple Pinwheel devices while maintaining screen time restrictions at home.

Two models with different designs

Pinwheel Home is available in two versions. The Spark model starts at $68 and is offered in white, black, blue, and purple finishes. The Classic version is priced at $79 and features a retro-inspired handset along with customizable stickers. It is available in pink, black, and white.

Calls placed between Pinwheel Home devices are free through the company’s Pinwheel Circle service. Families wishing to call standard phone numbers can subscribe to plans starting at $6.99 per month for up to 5 approved contacts, with an unlimited calling option available for $9.99 per month.

Growing interest in alternatives to smartphones for children

The launch reflects broader efforts by technology companies to create products that reduce children’s screen exposure while still allowing them to communicate with family and friends. Parents and educators have increasingly expressed concerns about the amount of time children spend using smartphones and social media platforms.

Research has associated excessive screen use with a range of developmental challenges affecting emotional, behavioural, and social well-being. In addition, a recent study from the University of Georgia found that children who spend more time on social media tend to show slower vocabulary development, including greater difficulty recognizing and pronouncing words.

Governments have also begun examining children’s online access. Australia has introduced restrictions affecting young users’ access to social media services, while the United Kingdom has announced plans to pursue similar measures.

Entering an emerging category of family communication devices

Pinwheel Home joins a growing selection of products intended to provide communication without the full capabilities of smartphones. Among the competing products is Tin Can, another Wi-Fi-enabled home phone that lets parents approve contacts via a companion app.

While both products offer free communication between devices within their own ecosystems, each also provides subscription options for calling traditional phone numbers. Pinwheel’s pricing starts at $6.99 per month, while Tin Can’s friends and family plan is $9.99 per month.

Pinwheel says the new device is available immediately through its online store. The company also expects to expand availability through Amazon later this fall, giving families another option as demand grows for technology focused on communication rather than constant connectivity.

Background

Pinwheel has built its business around technology designed specifically for children, with products that emphasize parental oversight and reduced digital distractions. Before introducing Pinwheel Home, the company offered kid-focused smartphones and added a smartwatch to its product lineup last year. The latest release extends that strategy by revisiting the traditional household phone in a modern Wi-Fi format while limiting features to voice communication.
