Google Pixel Watch 5 Adds Smarter Gemini and Advanced Health Monitoring
Google’s Pixel Watch 5 adds smarter Gemini features, advanced health monitoring, improved sleep tracking and up to 40 hours of battery life.
Google has unveiled the Pixel Watch 5, bringing a more proactive version of Gemini to the smartwatch, alongside new health-monitoring tools, more accurate GPS tracking, and upgraded hardware.
Announced at Made by Google, the Pixel Watch 5 starts at $399 for the 41mm model, while the larger 45 mm model starts at $429. Preorders opened Wednesday, with general availability beginning Aug. 20.
Pixel Watch 5 makes Gemini more proactive
Google is moving Gemini beyond responding to individual requests. The Pixel Watch 5 can surface context-aware information through At a Glance, including travel details and commute updates when they become relevant.
Raise to Talk also lets users lift their wrist to speak directly to Gemini. Tasks such as starting a workout, setting a timer, or retrieving reservation information can be handled without navigating through apps. Google says some core actions use on-device AI and can operate with low latency even when offline.
The watch runs on Qualcomm’s Snapdragon W5 Gen 2 Accelerated processor with a power-efficient dual-chip architecture. Google says it has 50% more RAM and 12% higher CPU performance than the previous generation, contributing to a 20% overall speed improvement.
Google introduces Health Guardian
Health Guardian is the biggest expansion of thewatch’ss health features. Rather than presenting its new measurements as real-time clinical readings, Google says the system is designed to identify longer-term changes in wellness indicators.
Monthly summaries can highlight trends in vascular and metabolic stress, as well as breathing quality during sleep. Google says the underlying models analyse signals gathered by the watch over time to identify changes that users might otherwise miss.
The company stresses that these features are intended for general wellness and informational purposes. They are not designed to diagnose, treat or screen for conditions such as hypertension, diabetes or sleep apnea, and should not replace professional medical advice.
Google is also introducing breathing emergency detection. The feature combines sensors, including a photoplethysmography sensor, an accelerometer, and a barometer, with on-device AI to detect severe, persistent drops in oxygen saturation. If the watch detects a potential breathing emergency and determines that the wearer is unresponsive, it can contact emergency services and provide the user’s location. Google says the feature will launch first in Europe, with availability varying by market.
Sleep and GPS tracking get more accurate
Sleep-stage detection is 15% more accurate than on the previous generation, according to Google. A dedicated bedtime watch face is designed to reduce distractions, while Smart Wake monitors movement and heart rate before an alarm and attempts to wake the wearer during a lighter stage of sleep.
Google has also redesigned its approach to GPS tracking. The company says route accuracy is up to twice as precise as previous Pixel Watch generations in challenging environments, using technology derived from Google Maps, 3D building models and atmospheric corrections to improve positioning around tall buildings and covered trails.
Pixel Watch 5 offers up to 40 hours of battery life
The Pixel Watch 5 is available in 41mm and 45mm sizes, with Wi-Fi and LTE configurations. Google rates the 41mm model for up to 40 hours of battery life, although actual endurance will depend on usage and enabled features.
New finishes include Fog, Canyon and Olive, alongside other configurations. With Pixel Watch 5, Google’s emphasis is on combining its wearable hardware with Gemini and Google Health, positioning the watch as both a hands-free AI interface and a device for tracking longer-term fitness and wellness trends.
