PitPro Deploys First Tire-Changing Robot at Canadian Tire Shop

PitPro Automation has installed its first robotic tire-changing system at a tyre shop in Calgary, Alberta, marking the startup’s first real-world deployment of technology designed to automate tyre replacement.

The San Francisco-based company says its system can replace a full set of four tyres in under 15 minutes. The first installation is at a Kal Tire location, one of Canada’s largest independent tyre service chains. PitPro Automation develops robotic systems for automotive service operations.

Robots Designed for Tire Shop Work

PitPro’s system fits into existing maintenance bays and uses two robotic units, sensors, and robotic arms to complete tyre changes. The machines locate and remove lug nuts, store them, remove wheels, and install new or rotated tyres.

Founder and CEO Jeremy Conrad said tyre shops face ongoing labour challenges because changing tyres is physically demanding. The company believes automation could help service businesses handle recurring tyre demand while reducing dependence on manual labour.

Expansion Beyond Fleet Customers

PitPro has focused primarily on commercial fleet customers, but Conrad said tyre chains represent another major opportunity because of their standardised layouts and potential for wider deployment.

The company is targeting larger chains rather than smaller independent shops because standardised facilities make robotic installation easier. PitPro also said mechanics can continue using the same service bay for other maintenance work.

Challenges in Real-World Deployment

Moving from development to active tyre shops has required adjustments. Conrad said the robots must operate in environments exposed to dust, debris, and changing weather conditions while maintaining accurate sensor performance.

During testing in Calgary, the company encountered an unexpected issue when the robots became covered with dandelion seeds. Conrad said the team reviewed the problem and that it would not affect the system’s operation.

PitPro plans to continue expanding its robotic tire-changing technology as it explores broader applications in automotive maintenance.
