Ring is expanding beyond video doorbells and security cameras with its first smart lock, designed to address one of the most common concerns about connected locks: what happens when the battery dies. The new Ring Smart Lock includes a hand-powered dial that can generate enough power to unlock the door when the battery is depleted.

Users can turn the dial several times to temporarily power the lock, enter the home, and then remove and recharge the battery pack. Ring founder Jamie Siminoff said the idea came from his own concern that a battery-powered lock at a vacation home could fail after long periods without use.

Four ways to unlock the door

Ring says the lock’s rechargeable battery is designed to last about a year and will send charging reminders through the Ring app. The app can also be used to manage access for people such as cleaners, dog walkers or family members who need occasional entry.

The lock supports four entry methods: a fingerprint reader, a backlit touchscreen keypad, the Ring app and Alexa. Ring also plans to open the product to third-party software integrations, which could support use cases such as automatically changing access codes for short-term rentals.

The device is designed to fit a standard single-cylinder deadbolt and will be offered in black, silver and brass finishes. Ring plans to sell it in the U.S. in the first quarter of 2027 after receiving FCC authorisation.

Ring also adds four new 4K cameras

Alongside the smart lock, Ring introduced four new 4K security cameras: the Outdoor Cam 4K Plus, Spotlight Cam 4K Plus, Floodlight Cam 4K Plus and Indoor Cam 4K with pan-and-tilt functionality.

The smart lock marks Ring’s move into another major category of connected home security, while the hand-powered backup gives the product a practical fallback that doesn’t rely on a hidden physical key or an external power source.
