Ron Johnson, the former Apple executive who helped create the company’s retail store strategy, believes artificial intelligence will improve shopping but will not replace the experience of visiting physical stores.

As technology companies invest heavily in AI shopping agents, Johnson argues that consumers will still want to see, touch, and experience products before making important purchases. “AI will improve the online shopping experience,” Johnson said, but he does not believe it will fundamentally change how people choose to shop.

AI Shopping Agents Face Limits

Companies including Google and OpenAI are developing AI-powered shopping tools that can help users discover products, compare options, and complete purchases. Johnson believes these systems can make consumers more informed but will not replace human judgment and physical product experiences.

He pointed to expensive purchases such as laptops, where customers often want to compare screen sizes, weight, and design before buying. According to Johnson, AI can help narrow choices before customers visit a store.

The Apple Store Philosophy

Johnson joined Apple in 2000 and helped build a retail network focused not only on selling products but also on education, support, and customer relationships. His new book, “Shop Different: How Retail Revealed Apple’s Genius”, explores the development of Apple’s stores.

He said Apple’s retail success came from its employees and customer service approach, including a store culture without traditional sales commissions.

After leaving Apple, Johnson led J.C. Penney in an attempt to transform the struggling retailer but was removed less than two years later after weak sales results, The Guardian reported.

Johnson later founded Enjoy Technology, an e-commerce company focused on delivering and setting up technology products at customers’ homes. The company eventually filed for bankruptcy in 2022 and sold most of its assets.

Despite his concerns about AI replacing parts of shopping, Johnson said he remains optimistic about the technology. He believes AI can support decision-making but that human intuition will remain essential.
