Spotify aims to become the leading platform for AI-powered personal audio
Spotify is expanding into AI-powered personal audio experiences, focusing on personalised content, voice technology, and smarter audio recommendations.
Over the past few years, apps such as Google’s NotebookLM, Hero, and, more recently, Adobe Acrobat have introduced tools that allow users to generate podcast-style audio content from existing materials like documents, articles, notes, and even daily schedules. Now, Spotify is moving to bring that type of AI-generated audio experience directly into its own platform, although users will currently need developer-oriented tools to make it work.
Spotify announced that users who already work with AI coding and agent platforms such as OpenAI’s Codex, Anthropic’s Claude Code, or OpenClaw can now use the company’s newly launched command-line interface (CLI), currently in beta, to create AI-generated podcasts and import them directly into Spotify for listening.
In a blog post, Spotify explained the reasoning behind the move. “People are already starting to use their agents to create personal audio that guides their day: from summaries of class notes before an exam to briefings of what’s on their calendar. And they’re asking for a way to listen to it on Spotify, where they already listen to everything else,” the company said.
The generated podcasts are designed for personal use and will appear directly inside a user’s Spotify library for easy access. However, these audio sessions are private and not publicly available to other Spotify users.
To use the feature, Spotify said users can visit the tool’s GitHub page and follow the setup instructions. During the process, users will be prompted to sign in to their Spotify account via a web browser to connect the CLI tool.
Once connected, users can type prompts asking the AI agent to generate a podcast on virtually any topic. Spotify provided an example prompt such as:
“Build me an audio session that dives deep into the history of the World Cup with details about key players, where it’s been held, and what I should know about the games this year.”
The AI agent can then generate the podcast episode and automatically save it to the user’s Spotify account. Users also receive a direct Spotify link for the generated podcast session.
The move highlights Spotify’s growing interest in AI-generated and personalised audio experiences as competition intensifies in AI-powered productivity and content tools. Instead of building a standalone podcast-generation feature in the Spotify app, the company is initially targeting developers and advanced users who are already experimenting with AI agents and automated workflows.
Spotify’s latest experiment also reflects a broader industry trend in which AI-generated audio is becoming more personalised and interactive. Tools like NotebookLM have already popularised AI-created “podcast conversations” that summarise documents and research material, while other platforms are increasingly using generative AI to turn text into audio content users can consume on the go.
By allowing these AI-generated audio sessions to live inside Spotify, the company appears to be positioning itself as a central destination for both traditional podcasts and AI-created personal audio experiences.
