Microsoft’s Xbox division will publish Physint, Hideo Kojima’s upcoming action-espionage game, after Sony ended its publishing partnership with Kojima Productions. The agreement keeps the project in development and expands Microsoft’s relationship with the Japanese studio, which is already working with Xbox on the experimental horror game OD.

Sony withdrew from Physint in June 2026, prompting Kojima Productions to spend about three months searching for a new publishing partner. Xbox confirmed the new agreement on September 9, then announced actor Bill Skarsgård as the game’s protagonist.

The change matters because Physint was originally announced in January 2024 as a PlayStation collaboration. The game marks Kojima’s return to the action-espionage genre he helped define with Metal Gear, though its gameplay, platforms, and release date remain unconfirmed.

Why Sony Withdrew From Hideo Kojima’s Physint

Sony’s decision to abandon the project surprised Kojima Productions. The studio announced Physint in partnership with PlayStation after the release of Death Stranding, presenting it as an ambitious new espionage experience.

According to Kojima, Sony notified the developer in mid-June that it would no longer proceed with the collaboration. The companies have not publicly given a definitive reason, although reports have raised questions about development costs, scheduling, and business priorities.

Sony said it continued to respect Kojima’s creative vision despite ending its involvement. The decision also does not mean the companies have severed their wider relationship, which includes their previous work on Death Stranding.

As Game Informer reported, the project subsequently found a new publisher in Microsoft, allowing Kojima Productions to continue development rather than cancelling the game altogether.

Xbox Expands Its Partnership With Kojima Productions

Microsoft confirmed the agreement in its September 9 announcement, describing Physint as the next stage of its collaboration with Kojima Productions.

Xbox CEO Asha Sharma welcomed the partnership, emphasising Microsoft’s interest in supporting creators pursuing ambitious projects. Kojima said the agreement would let his studio keep developing Physint while extending its existing relationship with Xbox beyond OD.

The companies also intend to collaborate on film and television projects, although they have not announced specific productions under the expanded agreement.

Kojima Productions later issued an official statement confirming that development would continue with Xbox as the publishing partner.

The arrangement gives Microsoft two upcoming projects from one of the industry’s most recognisable game creators. For Kojima Productions, it provides a path forward for Physint after the unexpected termination of its PlayStation agreement.

Physint Will Feature Bill Skarsgård in the Lead Role

Physint received another major update during Xbox’s Tokyo Game Show presentation on September 17, when Kojima announced that Swedish actor Bill Skarsgård would portray the game’s protagonist.

Skarsgård is known for portraying Pennywise in the It films and has appeared in productions including John Wick: Chapter 4. His involvement continues Kojima’s established practice of working with recognisable film and television performers in major gaming projects.

The confirmed cast also includes Charlee Fraser, Don Lee and Minami Hamabe. Kojima Productions released new promotional artwork featuring Skarsgård and Fraser, offering an early look at the game’s visual direction.

In its official casting announcement, Kojima Productions confirmed that the lead performers had already completed costume fittings, performance scans, and camera tests.

However, the studio has not revealed the characters’ identities, the story or detailed gameplay footage. Skarsgård’s casting establishes the protagonist’s performer without clarifying the game’s narrative.

Will Physint Be a Successor to Metal Gear Solid?

Physint has drawn particular attention because it marks Kojima’s return to action-espionage games after leaving Konami and the Metal Gear franchise.

At its original announcement, Kojima described Physint as an ambitious project intended to combine advanced game technology with cinematic storytelling. His Metal Gear background naturally invites comparisons, but Physint is a new intellectual property rather than an officially connected sequel.

The game’s espionage focus suggests stealth, infiltration, and tactical decision-making could be important, though Kojima Productions has not disclosed enough gameplay information to confirm specific mechanics.

Kojima has also indicated that Physint will pursue new creative ideas rather than reproduce the established Metal Gear formula. That distinction matters because expectations around his return to espionage could otherwise overshadow the new project’s identity.

The developer’s experience with performance capture, elaborate cinematic sequences, and unconventional storytelling provides a foundation for the project, but the project’s design remains largely undisclosed.

Physint Release Date and Xbox Exclusivity Remain Unconfirmed

Physinthas non announced release date. Kojima Productions continues development, but the studio has not provided a confirmed launch window or specified when it will publicly demonstrate gameplay.

Microsoft’s role as publisher also doesn’t automatically determine the game’s final platform availability. Although Xbox will publish Physint, neither company has confirmed whether it will launch exclusively on Xbox and PC or eventually become available on PlayStation.

The distinction matters because the project originally belonged to a PlayStation publishing partnership. Its move to Microsoft changes the commercial arrangement, but consumers should wait for official platform announcements before concluding exclusivity.

Kojima Productions is simultaneously developing OD, adding another substantial project to its schedule. The company has not detailed how it divides development resources between the two games or whether their release schedules will affect one another.

What Physint’s Move Means for Xbox and PlayStation

For Microsoft, securing Physint strengthens its relationship with a high-profile independent developer at a time when competition for distinctive games remains intense. Publishing both OD and Physint gives Xbox access to two distinct projects tied to Kojima’s creative reputation.

For Sony, the withdrawal represents a notable change from its earlier collaboration with Kojima Productions. However, the decision should not be interpreted as evidence that the companies have ended every professional relationship or that future collaborations are impossible.

The most important outcome is that Physint remains in development. Xbox has assumed publishing responsibilities, Kojima Productions has confirmed its lead actor, and the studio continues pursuing its return to espionage gaming.

There is still too little information to judge how Physint will play or whether it can match the influence of Kojima’s earlier work. Its publishing future is clearer now, but it will need to prove its creative ambitions through gameplay rather than announcements. For now, the Xbox agreement gives one of Kojima’s most anticipated projects a new path to release.
