Apple is working to make CarPlay compatible with AI chatbots like ChatGPT
Apple is exploring ways to integrate AI chatbots, such as ChatGPT, into CarPlay to make in-car interactions more conversational and hands-free for drivers.
Apple CarPlay users could soon interact with their preferred AI chatbots while on the road.
According to a report from Bloomberg, Apple is exploring ways to support AI chatbot applications within CarPlay. The report cites anonymous sources familiar with the matter.
Apple CarPlay functions as an app that runs on an iPhone and connects wirelessly to a vehicle’s infotainment system. It mirrors select apps from a user’s phone onto the car’s display, allowing drivers to interact with services such as Apple Music, messaging, and navigation using Apple’s voice assistant, Siri.
The company’s next-generation platform, CarPlay Ultra, expands on this concept by integrating with both the central infotainment screen and the digital instrument cluster directly in front of the driver. CarPlay Ultra also enables users to control specific vehicle settings, offering deeper integration between the software and the car.
If implemented, Apple’s latest efforts could allow AI assistants such as Google's Gemini, Anthropic's Claude, and OpenAI's ChatGPT to operate inside the car — potentially relegating Apple’s Siri to a less prominent role.
