Sports betting platform FanDuel is facing a lawsuit alleging it used VIP rewards and personalised incentives to encourage excessive gambling among high-value customers. According to The Philadelphia Inquirer, Philadelphia Phillies star and two-time MLB Most Valuable Player Bryce Harper recorded a personalised video message for one of the plaintiffs, Terry Thompson, as part of FanDuel’s VIP program for its biggest bettors.

FanDuel assigns dedicated VIP account managers to build relationships with high-spending customers such as Thompson, who, according to the lawsuit, has wagered approximately $18.5 million through the platform since 2020. Court filings allege that Thompson eventually took out second and third mortgages on his home, ultimately lost the property through foreclosure, and later sought psychiatric treatment for gambling addiction.

Sports betting companies frequently reward their highest-spending customers with benefits such as Super Bowl tickets, exclusive events, and other incentives. However, The Philadelphia Inquirer reported that it found no previous example of an active professional athlete sending a personalised video message directly to a sports bettor as part of such a VIP programme.

The lawsuit references a 21-second video, obtained by The Philadelphia Inquirer, in which Harper does not explicitly encourage Thompson to place bets. Instead, the baseball star says that Thompson’s FanDuel VIP host wanted to make sure he had an “extra special Thanksgiving.”

The incident has renewed debate over the increasingly close relationship between professional sports and gambling companies. While Major League Baseball players are prohibited from betting on the sport, the league has established numerous commercial partnerships with sportsbooks and prediction market platforms such as Polymarket. Betting advertisements have also become a common feature at MLB stadiums and during game broadcasts.

The issue has attracted additional attention following recent gambling-related investigations involving professional baseball players. Last year, pitchers Emmanuel Clase and Luis Ortiz were federally indicted over allegations that they accepted bribes to manipulate pitches during games, highlighting the continued scrutiny surrounding gambling’s growing influence in professional sports.
