OpenAI has introduced an Apple Messages plug-in that allows ChatGPT to search, summarise, draft and send messages from a user’s Mac. The company announced the integration as part of its plug-in system expansion.

ChatGPT can work directly with Apple Messages

Users can ask ChatGPT to find information from past conversations, summarise recent messages, or prepare follow-up replies. OpenAI has also shown the assistant suggesting messages to contacts based on conversations received the previous day.

The integration works with Codex and ChatGPT Work, giving it potential uses beyond personal messaging. OpenAI’s plugin documentation explains the permissions required for ChatGPT to access Messages on macOS.

Users can review messages before they are sent

By default, ChatGPT requires approval before sending a message, allowing users to review both the recipient and text. Persistent approval can be enabled for a conversation, but OpenAI warns that doing so removes the final opportunity to review a message before ChatGPT sends it under the user’s identity.

Privacy remains an important question

Access to private conversations raises questions about how message data is handled. OpenAI told Bloomberg that the Messages plug-in runs locally on theuser’ss machine and does not create a complete index of their messages.

The feature moves ChatGPT beyond simply suggesting text. With permission, the assistant can now search conversations, draft responses and complete the sending process directly through Apple’s Messages app.
