Spotify has expanded its parent-managed account feature to users on its free tier, giving more families access to tools designed to manage how children use the music streaming platform. The feature is now available in the United States, United Kingdom, Australia, France, Germany, and the Netherlands, extending functionality that was previously limited to paid subscribers.

The company’s Managed Accounts, introduced in 2024, allow parents to create separate listening profiles for children while maintaining greater oversight of the content they can access. Because the accounts operate independently, children’s listening activity does not influence their parents’ music recommendations or appear in their annual Spotify Wrapped summaries.

Spotify Parent-Managed Accounts Expand to Free Users

Children using Managed Accounts can save favourite songs, create personal playlists, and receive music recommendations tailored to their own listening habits. At the same time, parents retain control over content settings and account permissions.

Spotify said parents can block specific artists or songs if desired. Music labelled as explicit is turned off by default, and video playback is automatically turned off. Interactive features are also limited, preventing children from accessing age-restricted functions such as Messages.

Additional Safety Controls Without Using Spotify Kids

The expanded feature provides families with more flexible parental controls without requiring children to use the standalone Spotify Kids application. Parents can customise content restrictions while allowing younger listeners to enjoy a more personalised music experience.

The rollout reflects broader efforts across the technology industry to provide stronger online safety tools for younger users, as regulators continue to encourage companies to strengthen protections for children on digital platforms.

How Families Can Create a Managed Account

Eligible Family Plan account holders can create a Managed Account by opening their account page in the Spotify app, selecting Add a Member, and choosing the option to add a listener under the age of 3 or meeting the applicable age requirement in their market. Parents are then guided through the process of selecting a display name and configuring content preferences.

Spotify said parents can revisit these settings and update restrictions whenever needed as their child’s listening preferences change.

The company also confirmed plans to expand Managed Accounts into additional countries, although it has not announced a timeline for the broader rollout.
