United Airlines app adds TSA wait time feature at select airports
United Airlines updates its mobile app to show TSA wait times at select airports, helping travellers plan security checks and reduce delays.
United Airlines is rolling out a series of updates to its mobile app on both iOS and Android, including a new feature that provides estimated TSA security wait times to help travellers better plan their arrival at the airport. The update comes at a time when a partial government shutdown has led to staffing shortages at airport security checkpoints.
Within the “Travel” section of the app, passengers can now view estimated wait times at United’s major U.S. hub airports, including Chicago, Denver, Houston, Los Angeles, New York/Newark, San Francisco, and Washington, D... The app displays wait times for different security lanes, including standard screening and TSA PreCheck, across terminals used by United passengers.
United’s chief information officer, Jason Birnbaum, said the feature is intended to help travellers stay informed during a period of uncertainty. He noted that while TSA agents have begun receiving back pay, the broader impact of the Department of Homeland Security shutdown continues, making it important for passengers to anticipate delays.
Alongside the TSA wait time feature, the app now includes enhancements to improve the experience for travellers with connecting flights. Users will receive personalised, step-by-step directions to their next gate, including estimated walking times, live updates, and suggestions for managing longer layovers. The system can also notify travellers if the airline can hold a departing flight for those with tight connections.
United has also expanded its self-service capabilities within the app. In the event of a delay or cancellation, passengers will automatically receive rebooking options without needing to stand in line or manually search for alternatives. The app also provides additional support, such as baggage tracking information and eligibility details for meal or hotel vouchers.
Another update integrates Apple’s Find My ecosystem, allowing travellers to share the location of items tagged with an AirTag directly with United’s customer service team if baggage is lost. This feature is powered by Apple’s “Share Item Location” functionality and is designed to streamline the recovery process.
Additionally, the app now sends text notifications that include real-time radar maps, helping travellers understand how weather conditions in one part of the country may impact flights elsewhere.
With these updates, United Airlines keeps its mobile app as a central hub for managing travel, giving passengers more visibility and control throughout their journey.
