U.S. electric vehicle sales rose for the third consecutive quarter in Q3 2026, signalling a recovery after federal purchase incentives expired last year. Automakers sold an estimated 262,649 EVs, up 6.1% from the previous quarter, according to CoxAutomotive’s latest report.

EVs captured 6.4% of new vehicle sales, their highest market share since Q3 2025. However, quarterly sales remained 39.5% below year-earlier levels, when buyers rushed to take advantage of expiring federal tax credits.

Stephanie Valdez Streaty, director of industry insights at Cox Automotive, said more competitive EV pricing and higher gasoline costs were helping revive consumer interest. In its market analysis, the company described the latest results as evidence that the market is beginning to stabilise.

Toyota, Rivian and Subaru recorded strong gains. Toyota’s EV sales increased 328% year over year, while Rivian rose 45.7% and Subaru gained 31.5%. Updated Toyota bZ and Lexus RZ models contributed to Toyota’s improved performance, offering battery, charging and powertrain upgrades.

Tesla remained the largest EV seller despite a 19.7% annual sales decline. The company delivered 144,094 vehicles during the quarter, representing about 54% of the U.S. EV market, according to Cox Automotive.

Germany experienced a similar market adjustment after ending EV purchase subsidies in late 2023. Registrations initially dropped sharply before recovering, with German electric vehicle registration data showing renewed growth in 2026.

Although U.S. sales remain below last year’s peak, three consecutive quarters of growth suggest that demand is recovering without federal purchase incentives.
